During that time, the French society was divided into estates. They were the three : Cleary ( first state ), Nobility ( second estate ), and the Third estate ( consisting many groups ).

Louis XVI of the Bourbon family was the king at the time. He ruled the whole France.

The first two estates were privileged groups & were also exempted from.paying taxes. The third paid taxes to the king.
