How was Tom's loose tooth taken out?

Tom was suffering from a terrible toothache. The question is from the Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Aunt Polly first asked Mary to bring the thread and fire. Then  she tied one end of the thread to one of the teeth of Tom, and the other to the handle of the door.

After that she thrust the fire at the mouth of Tom, and then she shut the door up. After that the tooth started dangling at the bedpost. This showed that she cared about children and she was of a very strong character indeed.
