If India and China were two person instead of being nations, they would have described their relationship status with each other as “Its complicated”. And yes it is indeed complicated. Every one admits to the rivalry that exists between the two nations and the relationship dynamics are complex. I have often found myself intrigued by the relationship India has with her neighbours and would try to provide whatever little insight I have on this subject.

Early Days:

While the ancient India shared cultural ties with ancient China and the relationship goes back over two three millenia, the modern day China and India are fairly new born. India gained her independence in 1947 while Mao Zedong declared the formation of PRC in 1949. Point noteworthy here is India was one of the earliest nations to recognise the PRC. Post that Indian diplomats offered the permanent membership of UN to PRC, which I believe was a blunder. Then Indian PM, Pandit Nehru also accepted the chinese dominance of Tibet. He even coined the phrase Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai to describe the bilateral relationship between the two newly formed nations. Though soon the essence of the phrase started losing its charm under the rising tension between the two nations and later completely fell apart when China attacked India in 1962. India was defeated and most of the credit for that goes to our the then defence minister V.K Menon. The Nehru-Menon duo chose to ignore the warnings given by K.S Thimmaya, India’s Chief of Army Staff and other analysts. The Sino Indian relationship was “bumpy” ever since.
