  • Feudal privileges were enjoyed by the nobles.
  • All the members of the third estate had to pay taxes to the state. Share of taxes called tithes ( a tax levied by the church comprising one-tenth of the agricultural produce) was extracted from the peasants. This also included a direct tax called taille.
  • A number of indirect taxes were extracted through being levied on articles of everyday consumption like salt tobacco.

The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the third estate alone.
