The protection of environment has become prime requirement of our modern day human society. Global warming has created big challenge in front of us.As we are going through our busy life, the temperature of our planet is rising, leading to rising of sea levels, changes in rainfall
patterns, melting of glaciers and growing of disease. Preventing or reverting climate change is
responsibility of each and everyone of us. In such compelling scenario 4r principle of waste management comes to our rescue. This principle provides us an environment friendly approach towards effectively minimizing and managing waste. The theme of 4r principle is detailed below:-
1. Reduce - It is related to resource conservation. We should try to minimize and reduce the use of resources as much as possible. As the use of resource will be low it will lead to reduction in generation of wastes as well.
2. Reuse - There are lot of products that can be reused. Many products like water bottles, utensils etc can be used multiple times before being discarded. Our objective should be reuse something as many time as possible. Also It happens that one thing might not be useful for one's use, but may be useful for some other person. In such a scenario we should try to find out ways in which a product can be reused multiple times.
3. Recycle - There are many ways to recycle the products so that they can be used once again. We have such examples of jeans in market that are manufactured from plastic bottles. In this way many of waste products can be recycled and put to use rather then being wasted.
4. Recover - We should try to recover as much value from the waste product as possible. This strategy is implemented as last resort when more reuse and recycling of a product is not possible. In such situation we try to recover as much of energy value of the product as possible.
A wonderful example is given by our Prime Minister regarding the same. He said that in our home our mother wears sari cloth. When it becomes old a quilt is made of it and used.When the quilt becomes old it is used for cleaning of various articles. In the same manner we should try and find out ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover to manage waste in our daily life. It is not a one time activity, it is more of a life style commitment. If we commit to waste management in above mentioned ways, we will be able to contribute positively towards environment sustainability.
