A high percentage of illiteracy amidst the population of some states of India is a matter of concern. In this day and age, it is quite distressing therefore that those illiterate people are not aware of their rights and responsibilities. They have to depend on others as they cannot read or write and this often leads to their being duped by tricksters.

The Government of India and the State Governments have many schemes for the underprivileged, but a large section of them do not know of these as they can neither read the notifications or announcements that appear in newspapers nor write applications or fill up forms.

Managing one's property and finances too requires a certain level of literacy. Land deeds or bank documents in a person's name have often to be read out to that person, without the beneficiary or holder of the right or account knowing the facts for himself or herself. Merely by putting their right thumb impression they feel they have served themselves.

Being illiterate today is like living in darkness. The implications of having a small family too is lost on the uneducated. His or her poverty multiplies as the benefit of having the right family size is not understood.

In the modern world, we must know what is happening around us. This can be best known through reading of books, newspapers and periodicals. An illiterate person misses out in this sphere. A farmer, for example, must know about the best seeds available in the market, the best pesticide to use for his crop and the weather forecast for his area in the coming months. If the farmer is illiterate, he does everything like a blind man would do.

In view of the foregoing, a wise man is he who answers the clarion call of the Government, wakes up one fine day and decides to learn reading and writing.
