we can show that sunlight is needed for photosynthesis by a simple experiment
Take a potted plant and cover the mid part of a leave with aluminium foil and after some days pluck the leaf from plant and boil it in alcohol after that put few drops of iodin solution over leaf and you will observe that leaving coloured part whole leaf turns violet that shows presence of starch means that photosynthesis occured while the remained part shows that photosynthesis didn't occurred

If we keep a potted plant in dark for three days and then pluck a.leaf and do starch test, then we will find that starch formation hasn't been taken place i.e. photsynthesis has not taken place.
