The main function of bile in digestion is emulsification of fat - that is to break it down into smaller fat globules for digestion and absorption. In case of complete obstruction of the common bile duct, this will be hampered. So such a person will pass stools with high fat content.

Most common cause of obstruction is gallstone. And the person will experience abdominal pain especially after eating a fatty meal as the body tries to push the bile through the blocked duct by stimulating the contraction of its walls.

There will be impaired absorption of fat soluble vitamins (vit A, D, E and K) and their deficiency may manifest.
