9.8 m/s^2 is taken as the average value of acceleration due to gravity and - 9.8 m/s^2 is taken as retardation i.e. Negative acceleration. There is no way to take it because we have been taking it as it is. We can also take 10 m/s^2 but it is not as appropriate as 9.8 m/s^2.
