  • Born Hyder Ali, he rose to prominence as a soldier, attracting the attention of Mysore's rulers. As Krishnaraja Wodeyar II's Dalavayi (commander-in-chief), he came to rule the nominal monarch and the Mysore government.

  • By 1761, he had established himself as the de facto ruler of Mysore as Sarvadhikari (Chief Minister). Hyder Ali was the military commander during the First and Second Anglo–Mysore Wars' intermittent clashes with the East India Company.
