it helps us in digestion..
but doesn't harms our skin because it is inside a thick layer of mucus which protects our stomach from the acid

it is present in our stomach for performing the two important role :-
1:- the pepsin work in the presence of acidic medium it provide the acidic medium to facilitate the action of pepsin
2:- it kills the pathogens{ disease causing microbes} enter with food
although ,being its corroded nature it does not burn our skin because due to lining of mucus in the wall of stomach
