The poet is critical of his education because he feels it has not taught him how to control his groundless fears. This fact came to light after his encounter with the snake that had come to his trough to slake its thirst. On seeing the snake the poet could not help himself feeling scared of the snake. In his bid to make himself secure of the harmless snake, he instinctively tried to kill it. However, the snake writhed into its crevice fortunately. But his action left him regretful and conscience stricken. He believed it was his education that made him act so insanely. It is not a fact that an educated person becomes hard-hearted. Education is supposed to make man a better human being. However, becoming a better human entails self-control and taming the savage and wild instincts at work in every human being. It requires a lot of self-watchfulness and control over oneself to bring those savage instincts. Education often fails to do this. This is the main reason poet is critical about education.
