Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, today is a special day for the peace loving people around the world. The international Day of Peace or World Peace Day has been designated on 21st September by the United Nations, after Costa Rica and Great Britain moved a resolution in the General Assembly. The first such celebration took place in 1982. In 2013, the day was dedicated to peace education by the incumbent Secretary General, as it was felt that education would make peace more effective.
The day begins with the ringing of the peace bell at the UN headquarters in New York City. The bell is made from coins donated by children from around the world, except Africa, and is a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, which was devastated by the atom bomb explosions in World War II. The inscription on the bell reads " Long live absolute world peace".
World over, member states of the United Nations are expected to observe temporary ceasefire in combat zones. Elsewhere, the supreme leaders of nation states and peace groups propagate the message of peace.
Ladies and gentlemen, let us sink our differences and promote peace and harmony in our own small way for the well-being of mankind all over the world. Thank you!
