The west coast of British Columbia is susceptible to tsunami inundation from many sources around the Pacific Rim. Teletsunamis pose a large risk due to the size of coastline affected, however, a large magnitude earthquake at the Cascadia subduction zone has the potential to create a devastating tsunami in local coastal areas, including Bamfield, Port Alberni, and Victoria in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. My simulation of the Alaska tsunami of 1964 showed a long period wave approaching the British Columbia coast at an oblique angle, with much of the tsunami energy being reflected at the continental shelf. The areas of maximum amplitude are on the west coast of the Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), as well as Barkeley Sound, Alberni Inlet, and several coastal inlets, where wave amplification occurs due to constriction and reflection (Choi et. al., 2002; Clague et. al., 2003). The Alaska tsunami did not have a large impact in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, as much of its energy was directed offshore due to the oblique angle of incidence. Furthermore, it entered the Barkley Sound area from shallow water into deep water, which in some cases can lead to perfect reflection, depending on the exact angle (Mojfeld et. al., 2000
