The valency of element X in first compound is 3 because it forms covalent bonds with 3 hydrogen atoms which has 1 valence electron. Now in the second case X has 5 valence electron and this X may be the a transition element(grp 3 to 12) which shows variable valency and hence makes covalent bonding with 5 Chlorine atoms .

Sriharan2002: Can plss explain.. Plsss because I'm only the beginner
Sriharan2002: U tell me what is the answer??
gitanshugupta: The answer is that Element X has variable valency and it is 3 and 5
