put x = 1/2 in the equation

(1/2)^2 + k×(1/2) - 5/2 = 0

1/4 + k/2 - 5/2 = 0

k/2 = 5/2 - 1/4

k = 10/2 - 2/4 = 5 - .5 = 4.5
