Their present age ratio = 4:5 ie, their present ages are 4x & 5x yrs

Suppose after k years, their age ratio becomes 2:3

After k years, their age will be (4x + k) & (5x + k) yrs

& (4x + k) / ( 5x + k ) = 2y /3y ( given )

=> ( 4 + k/x) / ( 5 + k/x ) = 2/3

By cross multiplication

=> 12 + 3k/x = 10 + 2k/x

=> k/x = -2/1

=> k = -2 ……………. (1)

& x= 1 …………… (2)

=> after -2 years their age ratio = 2:3

Since time period is in negative

=> 2 years ago their age ratio was 2:3 …Ans

& since x = 1

=> Their present ages are 4 yrs & 5 yrs.....
