$2x + y = 6 - - - - - (1)\\ 2x - y = - 2 - - - - (2)\\ (1) + (2) \\ 2x = 4 \\ x = 2 \\ \\ 2x + y = 6 \\ 2 \times 2 + y = 6 \\ 4 + y = 6 \\ y = 2 \\ \\ xy = 2 \times 2 = 4$
