Hey !

Solution:

( a - 1 ) / a = 5

Cross multiplying we get,

=> a - 1 = 5a

=> - 1 = 5a - a

=> - 1 = 4a

=> a = ( - 1 / 4 ) => Equation 1

So we need to find a² + ( 1 / a² ) = ?

So a² = ( -1 / 4 )² = ( 1 / 16 )

1 / a² would be the reciprocal of a². So it would be ( 16 / 1 ) which is 16.

Hence a² + ( 1 / a² ) = 1 / 16 + 16

=> a² + ( 1 / a² ) = [ 1 + 16 ( 16 ) / 16 ] ( After taking LCM )

=> a² + ( 1 / a² ) = 1 + 256 / 16

=> a² + ( 1 / a² ) = 257 / 16

Therefore 257 / 16 is the required answer.

Hope my answer helped !
