If a player is injured during a football match, he is provided a ICE pack at 0°C but not chilled water at 0°C - Why?​

  • An injured player is provided an ice pack at 0°C but not chilled water at 0°C because it provides more cooling than chilled water at the same temperature ie 0°C.
  • This is because ice has latent heat of fusion in addition to the coldness it possess.
  • This means that it will provide an additional cooling of 1000 J which it has acquired for changing into ice from water at 0°C and water does not provide this additional cooling.
  • Hence ice is more effective for giving cooling to the injury of the player so it is given and not water.
