We know that,

Time = Distance/Speed

In the first case,

15 mins late = 1/4 hrs late =Distance (D)/60

In the second case,

4 mins late =1/15 hrs late = D/75

Since D remains the same in both the cases

Therefore,

D/60-1/4 = D/85-1/15

D/60-D/85 = 1/4-1/15=15-4/60=11/60,

D(17-12)/1020=11/60

5D/1020=11/60

5D×60=1020×11

D=1020×11/5×60

D=37.4 km

Ans: Distance covered by the train was 37.4 km.
