by pythagoras theorm (sum of the Square of perpendicular and the base is equal to the square of hypotenuse) perpendicular in this case is 3 and the base is 4. so the sum of squares is 9 + 16 which is 25 and 25 is the square of 5, hence the hypotenuse is equal to 5
