If there wouldn’t be epiglottis then the food which we eat could reach our lungs and coughing could happen again and again to remove the eating material from the lungs

If epiglottis is not there, the food will enter the food pipe and may cause blockage. When you can't breathe you eventually die. Also, it can enter the lungs and damage it, still leading to death.
