-1 was zero, so,

p(x) = ax^3 + x^2 + x + 4

a ( -1) ^3 + (-1)^2 + (-1) + 4 = 0

-a + 1 - 1 + 4 = 0

- a + 4 = 0

-a = 0 - 4

-a = -4

a = 4
