\frac{1}{4} *x = \frac{1}{5} *(x+1) + 3\\\frac{x}{4} = \frac{x}{5} + \frac{1}{5} +3\\\frac{x}{4} - \frac{x}{5}  = \frac{16}{5} \\\frac{x}{20}  = \frac{16}{5}\\ x = \frac{16}{5} * 20\\x = 64\\

Define x:

Let the number be x

1/4 of the number = 1/4 x

1/5 of its successor = 1/5 (x + 1)

Solve x:

one-fourth of a number is 3 more than one-fifth of its successor

1/4 x - 1/5 ( x + 1) = 3

x/4 - x/5  - 1/5 = 3

x/20 = 16/5

x = 16/5 x 20

x = 64

Answer: The number is 64
