When light is reflected off a more dense medium with higher index of refraction, crests get reflected as troughs and troughs get reflected as crests. The wave is said to undergo a 180 degree change of phase on reflection.

Question :

Choose the correct option :

If reflection takes place from a denser medium there will be a phase change of :

  • zero
  • π
  • π/2
  • π/3

Answer :

The correct answer is π.

When a wave is reflected from a denser medium , the wave is reversed in both of its directions and amplitude.

Hence , in the time domain , there is a change in phase of π .

Y = a sin (K c - ω t)

After reflection ,

Yr = - a sin (K c + ω t)

Thus ,

Phase difference is π.
