a minus b root 3 is equal to

\frac{\sqrt{3} -1}{\sqrt{3} +1} =\frac{\sqrt{3} -1}{\sqrt{3} +1} \times \frac{\sqrt{3} -1}{\sqrt{3} -1}=\frac{(\sqrt{3} -1)^2}{3-1} =\frac{3-2\sqrt{3} +1}{2} =2-\sqrt{3}

Then a is 2 and b is -1.
