If sodium reacts with oxygen to form sodium oxide(Na_{2}O) then how does the same sodium reacts with the same oxygen to form sodium peoxide(Na_{2}O_{2})?

Because as the formula of Na2O it contains only one molecule of oxygen where as in Na2O2 it contains two molecules of oxygen
