If the angle of dip at two places are 30° and 45
respectively, then the ratio of horizontal
component of earth's magnetic field at two places
assuming magnitude of total magnetic field of earth
is same, will be :-

The magnitude of total magnetic field of earth is √3 / √2.

Explanation:

The horizontal components are

  • (BH)1 =Bcosφ1
  • (BH)2=Bcosφ2

(BH)1 / (BH)2 = cosφ1 / cosφ2

                     = cos(30°) / cos (45°)

                     =  √3 / 2× √2 = √3 / √2

Thus the magnitude of total magnetic field of earth is √3 / √2.
