Underwater plate tectonic movements or underwater earthquakes, known as submarine earthquakes, are powerful enough for their effect to be felt on the surface of the ocean.

Common effects of such tectonics are tsunamis, underwater volcanic eruptions and sinkholes. Tsunamis happen due to pressure differences created by underwater earthquakes, causing gigantic waves to sweep on to the shores. Underwater volcanic eruptions are caused due to the release of magma through cracks and fissures on the ocean floor. Sinkholes, on the other hand are caused when tracts of land suddenly submerge because their continental plates have been affected by underwater tectonics.
