SOLUTION :

The correct option is (b) : x + y = 19

Given : MEAN of the frequency distribution = 9

Observations are : 6,7, x, 8, y,14

Total number of observations = 6

MEAN = Sum of all the observations/ Total number of observations

9 = (6+7+x+8+y+14)/6

9 × 6 = 35 + x + y

54 = 35 + x + y

x + y = 54 - 35

x + y = 19

Hence, the value of x + y is 19 .

(a)x + y = 21
(b)x + y = 19
(c)x − y = 19
(d)x − y = 21

Answer: B) x + y = 19

Explanation:

Value of the frequency distribution = 9

Observations are : 6, 7, x, 8, y, 14

Total number of observations = 6

MEAN = Sum of all the observations/ Total number of observations

9 = (6+7+x+8+y+14)/6

9 × 6 = 35 + x + y

54 = 35 + x + y

x + y = 54 - 35

x + y = 19

Therefore, the value of x + y is 19.
