Matter has been classified on two basis.
1. Physical Classification of the matter.
2. Chemical Classification of the Matter.

On the basis of the Physical Classification, matter has been classified into three category,
(a). Solids.
(b). Liquids.
(c). Gases.

On the bases of the Chemical classification, matter can be classified into two types ⇒ Pure substances and mixtures.

(a) Pure Substances.
Pure substances are made by only one kind of the atoms.
These are of two kinds

(i) Elements.
The substances which can neither be built from nor broken down into its constituents by any know chemical or physical methods is called as the Elements.

(ii) Compounds.
The substances which are made from two or more than to kind of the elements and having the fixed composition by mass is called as the Compounds.
It is of two types ⇒
Organic Compounds and Inorganic compounds.

(b). Mixtures.
The substances that are made from the elements or compounds in any ratio so that the components do not loose there identity is called as the Mixtures.
Mixtures are of two types ⇒

(i) Homogeneous Mixtures.
(ii) Heterogeneous Mixtures.

Hope it helps.
