Answer :

x = 1 and y = 7

Solution with full method :

Let, the given set is

  A = {(a, b) : b = 2a - 3}

Since, (x, -1) belongs to the set A,

    - 1 = 2x - 3

    or, 2x = - 1 + 3

    or, 2x = 2

    or, x = 1

Since, (5, y) belongs to the set A,

    y = 2 (5) - 3

    or, y = 10 - 3

    or, y = 7

Therefore, x = 1 and y = 7

To remember :

  While solving this type of problems, remember to put the given values correctly in conditions. After you find some equations, solve it with algebraic methods of solving equations with one variable or elimination and substitution method for more than one variable or any other method.
