Let the point P divide AB in ratio m1:m2

Then 2 = (m1.8 + 4m2)/(m1 + m2)

1 = (4m1 + 2m2)/(m1 +m2)

4m1 + 2m2 = m1 + m2

3m1 + m2 = 0

1 = (m1.4 + m2.2)/(m1 +m2)

4m1 + 2m2 = m1 + m2

3m1 + m2 = 0

m1/m2 = -1/3

Since m1/m2 is negative, The point P divides AB externally in the ratio 1:3
