Velocity of sound in hydrogen = 427.7 m/s

Given:

If the velocity of sound in helium at room temperature is 330 m/s.

To find:

Velocity of sound in hydrogen.

Formula used:

Velocity of sound = \sqrt{\frac{ \gamma \times p }{\rho} }

Where p = pressure

           \rho = Density

Explanation:

Velocity of sound = \sqrt{\frac{ \gamma \times p }{\rho} }

We know that    PV = nRT  ⇒   P =\rho \frac{RT}{m}

Where m = atomic mass of gas

So

Velocity of sound = \sqrt{\frac{\gamma RT}{m} }

Temperature is constant, R is constant

Velocity of sound ∝ \sqrt{\frac{\gamma }{m} }

We know that Atomic mass of helium = 4

                                    \gamma of helium = 1.66

                      Atomic mass of hydrogen = 2

                                    \gamma of hydrogen = 1.4

From above equation,

By putting the values,

Velocity of sound in hydrogen = \sqrt{\frac{42}{25} } × velocity of sound in helium

Velocity of sound in hydrogen = 427.7 m/s
