i s

+ t h i s

-------------

h e r e

now , there has to be carry over from i + i to get h+1 =e ; since if there is no carry it means h=e , which is not possible , since every letter has a different value , therefore h+1 =e ; now similarly there has to be a carry from h to t in so t+1 =h

now h has to be equal to 9 ; so that a carry (from previous i + i) will further generate a carry to t

therefore h = 9 ; now t+1 = h ; therefore t =8 ; h+1 =e => e=0;

now s+s = e ;

s+s = 0 (since e=0)

therefore s = 5 ;

now i + i + 1(one is carry from s+s)=r

2i+1 = r + 10 (since we need a carry for h);

now try different values ; r = 3 ; i = 6

so finally

r=3;

i=6;

h=9;

Given : THIS + IS = HERE

To Find : value of  (H/R)*l

Solution:

THIS

+     IS

_______

HERE

In a 4 digit number , 2 digit number is Added to get Another 4 digit number

Thousand place digit got increased by 1

Hence there must be 1 carry forward from hundreds place

H = T + 1

Similarly

E = H + 1

Hence

H = 9  , E = 0  ,   T = 8

S + S = 0

Either S = 0  or 5   But S can not be 0 as E = 0

so S = 5

S = 5

 89I5

+     I5

_______

90R0

I can be 6  R = 3      (H/R)*l  = (9/3) * 6  = 18

( Note : I can not be 5 as then  E = 5 , I can not be 7 as then R = 5 but E = 5 ,  I can not be 8 as T is 8 , I can not be 9 as  H is 9) and I can not ne less than 5 as then there would not be any carry forward)

8965

    65

____

9030

value of (H/R)*l is 18
