Explanation:

Parallel combination

Resistance

R1 = 5Ω

R2 = 10Ω

Emf = 6V

Total resistance = ?

For parallel combination

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3...

1/R = 1/5 + 1/10

1/R = 10+5/5×10

1/R = 15/50

R = 50/15

R = 3.33 Ω

Total current (i) = ?

V = iR

6 = i × 3.33

i = 6/3.33

i = 1.8 A

Series Combination

R = R1 + R2 + R3....

R = 5+10

R = 15Ω

Total resistance R = 15Ω

Total current (i) = ?

v = ir

6 = i × 15

i = 6/15

i = 0.4A

Answer:

  • Your question :

if two resistor of resistances 5 ohm and 10 ohm respectively are connected to a battery of EMF of 6 V then determine the value of the total resistance and current in the circuit when they are connected in (i)parallel combination (ii)series combination

  • Solution :

(a) (i) For minimum current we must make R maximum. This can be done by connecting the resistances in series.

(ii) For maximum current we must make R minimum. This can be done by connecting the resistances in parallel.
