If x = 2+√3, find the value of x +1/x.

Given :  x = 2 + √3 . …..(1)

or 1/x = 1/(2 + √3)

By Rationalizing denominator, we have  :

= 1 × (2 - √3) / [(2 + √3) × (2 - √3)]

= (2 - √3) / (2)² -  (√3)²  

[We know that, (a + b) (a - b) = a² - b²]

= (2 - √3)/(4 - 3)

= (2 - √3 )/1

= 2 - √3

1/x =  2 - √3 ………(2)

 

Then, x + 1/x

On putting the value from eq 1 & 2 :  

= (2 + √3) + (2 - √3)

= 2 + 2

= 4

Hence, the value of x +1/x is 4.
