Rationalising x and y, we get:
x =   \frac{ {(5 -  \sqrt{3)} }^{2} }{22}  \:  \:  \: y =  \frac{ {(5 +  \sqrt{3)} }^{2} }{22}
x - y =  \frac{(25 - 10 \sqrt{3}  + 3) - (25 + 10 \sqrt{3} + 3) }{22}
x - y =  \frac{ - 20 \sqrt{3} }{22}
x - y =  \frac{ - 10 \sqrt{3} }{11}
