If (x,y) ∈ Q₃ then (x, - y) ∈ Q

Given :

(x,y) ∈ Q₃

To find :

The quadrant where (x, - y) lies

Concept :

We know that in two dimensional geometry the Cartesian plane is divided by coordinate axis in 4 quadrant

1. Quadrant I : Both the x - coordinates and y - coordinates are positive

2. Quadrant II : The x - coordinate is negative and the y - coordinate is positive

3. Quadrant III : Both the x - coordinates and y - coordinates are negative

4. Quadrant IV : The x - coordinate is positive and the y - coordinate is negative

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Find the sign of x and y

Here the given point is (x,y)

Since (x,y) ∈ Q₃

Then , Both the x - coordinates ( Abscissa ) and y - coordinates ( Ordinate ) are negative

Step 2 of 2 :

Find the quadrant where (x, - y) lies

Since y - coordinates is negative

So for the point (x, - y)

Abscissa = x which is negative

Ordinate = - y which is positive [ Since y is negative ]

Thus (x, - y) lies in second quadrant

Hence (x, - y) ∈ Q₂
