There are different ways to view this whole debate. I notice that the millennial generation has made this whole “decade/era” conversation difficult. If you think about it, there were never any disputes about being a 70’s or 80’s kid…but when it comes to the 90’s everyone wants to name claim to that era.
What people need to understand that if you were born in a decade, you can’t really claim that decade. You weren’t cognizant during that era because you were a child! For example: my dad was born in the mid-50s but considers himself a 70’s kid. This is because the 70’s is the era where he came of age, graduated school, and started partying. Towards the 80’s, that’s when he met my mom and settled down. If you listen to Jay-Z, you’ll notice that he glamorizes the ‘80s as his era although he was actually born in 1969. But he came of age in the ‘80s so he considers himself an 80s kid.
But when it comes to the 90’s babies, we want to claim the same decade that we were born in. But it doesn’t work that way. The true 90s kids were born in the late 70’s to mid 80’s. They actually enjoyed the 90’s songs, TV shows, movies, fashion, video games, etc. during the time they were released. They didn’t have to do extensive research to learn the songs from the past like us 90’s babies did. And just because your parents still had technology from the 90’s in the early ’00s doesn’t qualify you as a 90’s kid. It’s natural for eras to sorta bleed into each other at the start and end of a new decade.
The problem is that we have glorified the 90’s so much. It’s the last decade of the 20th century and there is a bit of elitism when it comes to being from that era. Being from the 20th century automatically makes you tougher, wiser, and more well-rounded than the people born in the 2000s. For some reason, it’s not sexy to call yourself a 2000’s or 2010’s kid. But eventually, those decades will be glorified the same way the 80’s and 90’s are now. People are already starting to consider the early 00’s as old school and retro.
I was born in 1991 and although I do have very faint memories from the 90’s, I became fully aware in the 00’s. I fully came to age around ’05-‘06 and graduated high school in 2009. Then I really started having fun in the ‘10s decade. I consider 2010–2016 to be my heyday because that’s when I was partying a lot, making money, sleeping around, and really being a true fan of music. Even though I was born in the 90s, I’m pretty sure I’m going to tell my kid’s about how great the 2010’s were.
