As I got trapped on the beach, I ensured my survival until some help arrived. The top priority was to search for drinking water and food. I collected as many coconuts as possible from the coconut trees that abounded on beach. The next priority was to find source of food. In this emergency situation, fruit trees could be of great help. On islands, coconut palm trees can easily be found. Fish can also be caught from the streams of fresh water. Next priority was to find an ideal shelter that would be quite safe. Hammocks, high above the ground could be tied for the safe sleep for the first night. Hammocks would keep me safe on that unfamiliar beach. In order to keep the cold off at night, I lighted the fire. Fire could be produced by hitting two stones against each other, or by rubbing two dry sticks vigorously. A burnt fire also helped in keeping dangerous animals at bay. Next day I devised some methods to send SOS signals, either by burning fire and putting wet wood or leaves on it for smoke. These are some of the measures that I did to survive on an unfamiliar beach. Finally I climbed a cliff to see whether there was any boat or ship around whose help I could take to get back home.
It was during last summer vacation we went on a tour to Australia. My friends had already recommended me to visit Whitehaven beach which stretched over seven kilometers of Whitsunday island. He also told me to try snorkeling, but with my hydrophobia, I doubted if I would ever do it. Two of my friends, Zahid and Marc were quite determined to do it.
When we reached the island and saw thencrystal clear water, I was more than excited to go inside the water despite my hydrophobia, I could not control my urge and I decided not to go very far and remain within the safe limits. It was like an out of the world experience to walk on the sandy beach and wet myself in the clear salty water, at the same time I was cautious enough to keep it knee-high only. I stood there listening to the language of the sea and the waves, enjoying every minute of it unaware of the fact that a giant tide galloped towards the shore and in my nervousness I dropped my spectacles in the sea. The wave swept me off and I didn't even know swimming. I regretted my friend's suggestion to take swimming tube along. I lost my wits and couldn't think what to do in that condition. I said my prayer and left myself at the mercy of Him. I remember for sometime I kept drifting with the wave, I didn't know to which direction. All I knew was I lost hopes and my fear aggravated it.
When I regained my consciousness I came to know that I had been saved by the patrolling guards and taken to one of the rocks. The warmth of the rock comforted me. My friends had also arrived and I thanked God for having heard my prayer, or else I wouldn't have been narrating my experience here to you.
