The Company's officers do not enjoy much favour with the Indians and are regarded with contempt. All Englishmen are regarded with suspicion.

I was appointed as an officer in the Company and sent to India to help in implementing the policies of the British in India. I find that the Indians though they are poor, have a lot of self respect. They love their country and regard every foreigner with suspicion. They have strong ideas about society and religion and dislike any changes being made by an outsider.

I have noticed that there are differences of opinion and rivalries between people and the local rulers. But when it comes to an Englishman they tend to join together to despise the intrusion.

Thus I find that I can carry out my work by imposing my authority and pressure. There is no willing acceptance of my will as I am an Englishman, a person to be disliked.
