Asoka was the founder of the Buddhist religion. For Buddhas he is a very sacred person. He traveled around to find the sufferings of the poor and found that only monks could reach Nirvana the Buddhist heavens by some rules. He was not allowed to leave the palace because a future teller had predicted that he would be a founder of a religion but his father the king didn't want to.
