abroad, Sarojini returned to India. She married Govindarajulu Naidu, a military doctor, in 1898.
Sarojini Naidu got involved in the freedom struggle after meeting Gopal Krishna Gokhale, who suggested that she meet
Gandhi. She met Gandhi in London in 1914, and became dedicated to the freedom movement after that They worked
closely on the movement. Gandhi gave Naidu the nickname "Nightingale of India" because of her mesmerising poety.
As a member of the INC, she addressed huge rallies and gatherings of students, women and factory workers. She
captivated the audience with her powerful speeches. At the time, most Indian women were uneducated, and had been
married at a very young age. Sarojini Naidu inspired many such women to join the freedom struggle. She was elected as
the president of the INC in 1925, and was the first Indian woman to be its president.
On May 21, 1930, Sarojini Naidu led two thousand protestors to the Dharasana Salt Works in Gujarat. The British
government was ready to block the marchers and the Salt Works was bounded by barbed wire and ranks of policemen
armed with rifles and steel-tipped lathis. Before they had started, Naidu reminded them of Gandhi's strict instructions- 'YOu
will be beaten, but you must not resist,” she had said. “You must not even raise a hand to ward off a blow." The marchers
proceeded to the salt works, and many were injured by the policemen's lathis. This proved to the world that non-violence
was not for the meek or cowards.​
