Total number of heads = 96 (Given)

(* Not that the total number of heads will imply the total number of animals)

Total number of legs = 280 (Given)

(*Note that horses have 4 legs and hens have 2)

Assumed that all the animals are hens:

Total number of legs expected = 96 x 2 = 192 legs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, we know that there are 280 legs, so the extra legs must belong to the horses.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the extra legs:

Number of extra legs = 280 - 192 = 88 legs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the difference in the number of their legs:

Difference in the number of legs between the horse and the hen = 4 -2 = 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the number of horses:

88 ÷ 2 = 44

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the number of hens:

96 - 44 = 52

Answer: There are 44 horses and 52 hens.
