In a circle of radius 5 centimetre , AB and CD are two parallel suits of length 8 centimetre and 6 centimetre respectively . Calculate the distance between the chords if they are (1) on the same side of the centre (2) on the opposite sides of the centre .

radius drawn to the midpoint of any chord divides the cord into two equal parts
let the midpoint of AB be M
M=1/2x8=4cm
OM = root(5^2-4^2)=3
let N be the midpoint of CD
N=1/2x6=3cm
ON=root(5^2-3^2)=4
1)distance=4-3=1
2)distance=4+3=7
