Given : In a circuit, a wire of certain length and thickness was used and reading of ammeter was noted. Now it is replaced by a thicker wire of same material and same length in same circuit.

To Find : The reading of ammeter will

Solution:

a wire of certain length and thickness was used and reading of ammeter was noted.

R = ρL/A

L = length

A = Area

R = Resistance

ρ = Resistivity

Ammeter read Current flowing through wire

I = V / R

=> I = V / ρL/A

=> I = V A /  ρL

a thicker wire of same material and same length in same circuit.

Hence V is same ,  L is same ρ is same

but A is more :

I = V A /  ρL

I is directly proportional to A if V, L &  ρ are constant

Hence I will increase as A increase

=> The reading of ammeter will increase

Explanation:

The resistance of a wire having length L and cross sectional area A can be written as;

R = p x L / A

This indicates that lenght is directly proportional while area is inversely proportional to resistance.

Now a thicker wire means more area, which means that resistance of thick wire will be lower in comparison to first wire.

Now when resistance is lesser than more current will flow and hence ammeter will show more reading in this case
