total distance=160kmph
time taken in first 120km=120/80=3/2h.
time taken in next 40km=40/40=1h.
average speed = total distance/total time taken.
=>160/5/2=64kmph. ANS

Given :

Total distance travelled , D = 160 km .

Train covers the distance 120 km at a speed of 80 kmph and the remaining distance at 40 kmph.

To Find :

The average speed of the train for the whole journey .

Solution :

We know , average speed is given by :

v_{avg}=\dfrac{\text{Total distance covered }}{\text{Total time taken}}\\\\v_{avg}=\dfrac{160}{\dfrac{120}{80}+\dfrac{40}{40}}\\\\\\v_{avg}=64\ kmph

Therefore, the average speed of the train for the whole journey is 64 kmph.
