Let the total no. of students be x

boys %=100%-40%=60%

60% of x=600

60/100*x=600

x=(600*100)/60

x=60000/60

x=1000

Girls=(1000*40)/100

=40000/100

=400girls

The total number of students in the school is 200.

Given:

Percentage of female students in a school = 40%

The number of boys exceeds the number of girls by 40

To Find:

The total number of students.

Solution:

We can simply solve this problem by using the following mathematical process.

Let the number of students be x

Then, given that 40% of students are girls i.e. \frac{40}{100}x

The rest 60% will be boys i.e. \frac{60}{100} x

Now, it is also given that the number of boys exceeds the number of girls by 40 i.e.

\frac{60}{100}x -\frac{40}{100}x =40

\frac{20}{100}x =40

x=200

Hence, The total number of students in the school is 200.
